Liu Xiaodong has always had a strong and lasting interest in painting. His faith in the art form has never wavered, and he has always clearly expressed his affirmations of the value of painting in his work. Even as the modern art movement swept across the country in the 1980s, Liu persevered in realism, turning his attention to daily life and familiar figures, and striving to express the independence and estrangement that common people faced. For him, “modernity” is direct and documentary.
As a representative of the “Cenozoic” painters, Liu Xiaodong today is more than just a hotspot in the mainstream, he is also highly coveted by collectors. A keen observer of our changing times, not only has he discarded with flashy and overarching narratives, he has made a tight connection between the reality of the individual and the absurdity of the era. To varying degrees, every common person depicted in his works comes to form a penetrating look at life.
